Celebrating 100 Years of NCEES

Exam Services

NCEES develops the exams that U.S. engineering and surveying licensure boards use as part of their licensing process.

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first step in the process to becoming a professional licensed engineer (P.E.). It is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program.

The Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam is the first step in the process to becoming a professional licensed surveyor (P.S.). It is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate surveying degree from an ABET-accredited program.

The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam and Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam are designed for engineers and surveyors, respectively, who have gained at least four years of post-college professional experience. The exams test the ability to practice the professions competently.

Volunteers

Thousands of professional engineering and surveying subject-matter experts contribute their time and expertise to help advance their professions through volunteering. They work with staff and psychometricians to ensure that NCEES exams continue to be reliable measures of candidates’ competence.

Every year, hundreds of licensed engineers and surveyors—some of the best and brightest in their fields—come to NCEES headquarters to write and evaluate exam questions. For many, it is a great chance to strengthen their profession while meeting colleagues from a variety of professional backgrounds and earning professional development hours.

Computer-based testing

NCEES began the process of transitioning exams to CBT in 2011. CBT exams are administered at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers. The transition to CBT offers many benefits, such as enhanced security for exam content and more uniformity in testing conditions. For most exams, it also provides greater scheduling flexibility.
